Raimey,
I believe the stamp is 7.8 57 instead of 8 57.The 7 is on the side and hard to see. This shows the bore(not groove or bullet diameter)diameter and case length for the nominal 8x57 IR cartridge( also the 8x57R/360, but it is not this cartridge since a 8x57 IR is larger in dia.,and will chamber).

Indeed Ford the proofhouse marks are 7,8 above 57 but the stamps I was referring to are near the script WK and are 16 8IR just above the Böhler steel type stamp.

Kind Regards,

DerAmi/Mike,

Thank you very much for the detailed response, I really appreciate it. This may be a dumb question, but just to be safe (as rifles have much higher pressures than shotguns), does 8x57IR = 8x57JR? I have never heard of 8x57IR, but seen 8x57JR in many places and have 1 box.

Thanks again.

Does 7.8x57 IR = 8x57JR?

When I drop an 8x57 JR cartridge in it feels like it fits like a glove with no resistance, but have never fired it.

19glendale,
Yes, they are the same. The original military 8x57 cartridge was the 8x57 Infantry(hence 8x57I)when they made it with a rim for drillings, etc;this cartridge was the 8x57Infantry Rimmed (8x57IR).In old German script, an I looked like an English J ,to some people,so it was usually written as 8x57JR in English. The "S" in 8x57IS and 8x57IRS stands for spitzer. When they reduced the weight and increased the velocity, they increased the rifling depth and bullet diameter(to .323")so the bullets would "hold the rifling".
This bullet was a spitzer. The 7.8 57 is not really the cartridge designation, rather it is the bore diameter(not groove or bullet dia.)as measured by the proofhouse with "plug guages" and the legnth of the case. The nominal cartridge designation is 8x57IR.Note that I have a drilling also marked 7.8 57, that is chambered for an entirely different cartridge-8x57R/360.Don't feel bad if you are confused, most people are, even those of us that think we understand it.

You guys are a real wealth of information to the German gun enthusiast. I don't know how many times you have steered me the right way and I thank you all for it.
You need to get together and write a book including all your detailed information. Be sure to include the "sometimes but not always " stuff too!

19glendale,

2 1/2" shot cartridges can easily be ordered directly from:

RST - Classic Shotshell Co., Inc.

http://www.rstshells.com/

and

Polywad, Inc.

http://www.polywad.com/

If you'd like to try shooting slugs out of your left tube, turning your drilling into a less expensive double rifle drilling, Brenneke USA now sells 2 1/2" 16 ga Brenneke slugs. You may be surprised to see how well they shoot and how effective they are on large game.

Your grandfather gave you a beautiful drilling, I'll second Mike's recommendation for you to keep the gun and use it. Acquiring and/or reloading ammunition for these old treasures is not a problem at all.

Enjoy!
