A little good news for a change. The 2014 roadside count shows Pheasant numbers up quite a bit, with the highest counts since 2008. I may actually go out this Saturday for the opener. Now, if we can only have a mild Winter and a warm and dry Spring.. http://www.iowadnr.gov/Portals/idnr/arsrpt14.pdf

I prefer wood to plastic, leather to nylon, waxed cotton to Gore-Tex, and split bamboo to graphite.

Expect the opener will be pretty slow, with a lot of crops yet to be harvested. Yes, a mild--and late-arriving!--winter would be good, both for bird survival and to allow hunters to get after the birds for a few weeks once the crops are out. Iowa birds need at least one more good year, in addition to an increase in bird-friendly habitat. Might see some of the latter, if Washington cooperates with its conservation policies and crop prices remain low.

They're estimating harvest this year to be in the 200,000 bird range, about double of last year. We're still a long way from the 1,000,000 bird harvest of years past.
