In no way am I arguing, just observing. But I find with the guns I own that I have tried to have "put right" that I have a great deal of satisfaction when I look at them, knowing that I had a hand in removing the absent or clumsy attempts at repair and maintenance.

I look and use the guns I have done this with and it reminds me of the need to get the others rehabilitated. We'll all feel better (my guns and me LOL) when the job's completed.

Again, I want to be clear, this is not with guns of a collectible nature nor for any perceived resale value. It's purely to bring good quality shooters back to the best possible useable condition. I'm aiming for well maintained classics.

The problem with being passionate about a particular thing in old doubles is most if not all old guns have defects and trade-offs

While this statement is of course totally True, I would also offer the alternative supposition. The guns having the highest collector value were made by companies who earned a reputation for their products in USE. Had they not have been used & earned that reputation There would be little interest in them today. Personally for a using gun I do not really want one that looks as if it just rolled out the factory door. These I will leave for the dedicated collector with the big deep pockets. I have no problem using a gun with a few defects from honest use as long as its not abused or even one with some "Incorrect" restoration as long as its good work & the price is right.

I do realize that in this case the real question is on the actual value of this particular gun. From the input it appears to buy it you will have to pay or work you neither want nor like. In most cases I would think the answer obvious. however the bottom line is, Is this particular model in this configuration that you desire hard enough to come by that you are willing to live with the defects. Only you can answer that question.

Let it go. Another lesser mentioned reason is that, if you pay the asking price, you are sanctioning the improper restoration of guns and telling the market it is okay. People will see it sell at that price and think, well heck, I can do that, too. The market works.
