I have a WW11 bring-back Luger P08 serial number 7874 std 4" barrel, fixed sights, wooded checkered grips- My friend Brad Bachelder looked at yesterday, he voiced the opinion that it was maybe a Luftwaffe issue- the Waffenant on the right hand front receiver side has the std German Eagle (Der Adler) and the Luftwaffe Eagle has one talon lower than the other, and a thunderbolt (Rune) in its grasp-- but here is a strange set of stamped marks for your consideration. two in a row-straight line about 1/2" long- 655 and above it- a stamped of what looks to be a triplane- perhaps a WW1 Fokker- "Curse you, Red Baron, already?"- Can anyone shed some light on this set of twice stamped marks before the Waffenant. Danke!! Der Fuchs

go here RWTF

http://luger.gunboards.com/activity.php

If you can find them,Jan Stills books are by far the best investment you can make if you want to enter the luger world.

The only Luftwaffe reference I can find is the "ku" suffix added 41 BYF "might" have late war connection to the luftwaffe.

The tri-plane appearing image /655 is the Waffenamt.

Eagle/655,,,,
Waffenamt-Gov't inspectors mark(s) applied to the makers parts while in the factory.

Two of them on the right side of the rec'vr.
One is for the acceptance proof of the slide itself.
The other for the acceptance proof of the entire pistol.
The marking to the extreme right is the Mauser factory firing proof mark

All of these markings changed through the war. The Waffenamt used at the Mauser Works prior was 'Eagle/63'.

The Factory Test Proof mark evolved from a so called dove type image in the Weimar Era to several 'stick eagle' type images w/ talons and a tail evolving with it.
Dies broke and were replaced as production went on so there are lots of differences for sure.
Krieghoff proofs are somewhat distinctive in their Eagle images and sometimes suggest LuftWaffe ownership.

It all got to very deep and mysterious for me long ago and I left it at that,,,just enjoying the Luger for what it is.

Nice late production pistol. They make for nice occasional shooters as well as a great collectable.

The Luftwaffe Adler- Eagle is different from the Waffenamt and Third Reich Eagle in that it has one talon below the other, I believe grasping a Rune- Lighting Bolt-
