In the UK Methylated spirits is a mixture of Ethanol and Methanol in various proportions with the addition of Pyridine to give it an obnoxious taste and smell together with Methyl Blue for colour. It is the Methyl Blue that can give rise to changes in the colours of dyes etc; Industrial alcohol on the other hand is Ethanol Methanol mix without the Methyl Blue and far better than Methylated spirits but difficult to obtain in small quantities.
