I saw my first Super Fox this morning. It came into a friends shop for an informal assessment. (Before anyone starts sending me PM's, the gun is not for sale. Owner inherited it from his grandfather and currently plans on keeping it).

Quite an amazing chunk of steel, the proverbial gun on steroids. I thought it was a 10ga before I opened it up and saw the breech wall thickness. This must be one of the first, the serial number was 278xx, much lower than the one made for John Olin which Macintosh's book describes as being one of the earliest guns.

We determined the gun is all original with about 90% each blue and case color. looks like straight grained English walnut, 30" bbls bored .750 &.748 with about .048 choke in each. I think the weight was in the 9.5# area. The barrel flats were marked "Barrels not guaranteed, see tag" with the S/N and not much else.

Two things wrong with the gun, the first, a dried out red pad is easily corrected. The second is that the top rib is loose at the muzzle which means to be properly fixed would require a reblue, losing all the original blue. A bit of a quandry since the rest of the gun is so pristine.

Straight stock, very shootable dimensions but certainly not a snap shooter. If I can get back there with my camera I will.

The HE is a favorite of mine too. Perfect double for the blind. Mine is serial number 30,5xx. PG stock with 32" bbls. I replaced the pad and refinished the wood and she should be good to go for the next 100 years.

The target lies within.

I once owned a HE that I found in a gun shop on the eastern shore of maryland in 1990. The barrels had been cut to 29" but it was in nice condition with about 50% CC. It was on consignment and I paid $635. I shot 3" steel thru it(not much choke left-it probably started out a 32")for a few goose hunts, and sold it 3 years later to Galazan for $1300.
I am still kicking myself in the A$$!

Anyone come across a 29" Super Fox fitting this discription?

Thanks for listening,
Fritz

Bad move, Fritz. Not too long ago, there were unfinished 0 frame barrels on the market. Tony probably rebarrelled and remarked your old gun. Do you remember the serial number in case someone can look it up. I would trade a graded Lefever for it. Murphy

Bill,
Hope you are doing well. It's been awhile since we have crossed paths.
I do have the # scratched down at home, I will try to find it and PM it to you. I bought this gun @ Albright's, I don't believe they knew it was a HE as it was only marked "Fox"! It was on the floor rack not behind the counter with the good stuff.
I have 3 Lefevers that I can't seem to sell, maybe I'll bring the to Pintail next fall to see if there is any interest.
Let me know if you would like to get together sometime and shoot at PG.

And yes I DO know that it was a bad move!

Fritz

Bill,
There's your serial number. When do I get my graded Lefever?
