Hey guys,

I've got an old SxS that I know pretty much nothing about; was hoping that i could get some knowledge on this old Ford.

The little bit of info I have is that William Ford was a barrel maker primarily, and that his techniques were ahead of his time. It seems that this entire gun was made by him, however, as his name is engraved on the sidelock. I know that my father bought this from Hill Rod and Gun, but can't find in in their archives. Maybe they don't go back to '03 or I can't find how to get there.

Thank ya'll for the info!

You can't beat a set of Ford tubes. Looks like it experienced repair and subsequent London reproof.

Kind Regards,

William Fords trade Label states that he was awarded a gold medal and gold cross for his work in boring the barrels of 12G and 16G Guns used in the "Field" trials of 1879.
Records indicate that he did not commence business as full fledged gun maker till 1885.At which time he is listed in St Mary,s Row and Loveday Street, Birmingham. According to Boothroyd the company made many moves not all of which are recorded. At some time in the 1900,s Fords acquired the business of James Carr and Sons, who we find listed in St;Mary,s Row,Birmingham.
In 1989 I visited William Ford at;352 Moseley Road, Birmingham. The purpose of my visit was to obtain the history on a gun of their make #13448.Fords had detailed records of their gun sales.I found that my gun was made in 1923.
I believe that Fords continued in business till 1991 at which time it was sold to Bailions, another Birmingham company. Bailons is no longer in business but their Managing director Sir Malcolm Guthrie may be able provide information on your gun.

It looks like originally black powder proofed in Birmingham and then in 2,000 was nitro proofed for 2 1/2" ammunition. The serial number puts it circa 1896. Lagopus.....
