mike: got up late this morning to an absolutely gorgeous northern new England summer day! at noon, temp is 74, low humidity, not a cloud in the sky and a slight breeze. feels like one of those days when I make up with my wife, after she has been mad at me for three days...anyway, email me your mailing address at gded14@yahoo.com and I will get those two books in the mail to you.

another dog story: he was my childhood doggie and friend. his name was blackie. he was a border collie. blackie would try to herd everything, including me. his favorites though, were blue jays and cars. he would chase jays from tree to tree and stand there barking at them. one time he went up a banyan tree after one and could not get down without the help of my dad and a ladder. sadly, blackie came to an untimely end when he bit a little too close at the front tire of a speeding '53 chrysler woodie...when his time came, he went doing what he was born to do. should we all be so lucky.

as to quail hunting...I need to confess a sin. here and now seems to be a good time and place.

used to hunt quail in a small family citrus grove in south central florida. it was a sandy, cultivated environment. the trees provided shade and cover for the birds. the grassy area surrounding the grove provided food. the usual 4pm rain shower provided water...best time for hunting was at dusk when the birds were bunched up and in under the trees taking dust bathes and getting ready for the night... and now, here comes the bad part...I would creep up on those pastoral scenes and blast away with my sawed off 410. usually would get one or two that way, without regard to how many I wounded. I know, I know it was covey bustin! but I was young and stupid and did not know any better at the time...may the gods forgive me.

der: never suggested that only grouse hunting is worthwhile...however, it was my favorite pass time for many years.

Ed we all have sinned. As an adult I hunted the last birds of a covey to extinction. Unsportsmanlike. Done in ignorance and under the thrill of the chase. But I still feel bad when I remember.

Remembering my sins helps me tolerate others'.

That is a real coincidence. I thought of those pictures when we were discussing on this thread last night. I thought about trying to search them out.

The cars and clothes have changed and there are a lot more dogs now but that pretty much captures the essence of a Texas dove hunt.

Up until a few years ago there was a "group" bag limit. So ten hunting licenses meant the group could take 150 dove. So everybody loaded up their grandpa, their wife, their kids, anybody that could get a license and fire a gun, and took them along - so they could shoot more birds. grin

Thanks for sharing that webpage.

besides, out foxin the game warden was half the fun of squirrel huntin. yall probably don't do much o dat round amarilla, seein as how der aint no trees fer da squils to hide in...

mike: glad you like the life photos from the 60's of a classic texas dove shoot.

for comparison purposes, here are some links to some classic northern grouse hunting art:
