I go back and forth between the two without much thought to it. I agree with most of the above and especially with Don's statement that the straight grip working better with double triggers is an old wives' tale. The writer who claims this usually states with great authority that it allows you to slide the hand back or forward to reach the other trigger. My hand never moves when changing triggers. I think I prefer the looks of a straight grip on SxS, pistol grip on O/Us and repeaters. Definitely a pistol grip on a target gun. JL

I'm with Jim and Don. I like them both and have guns in both straight and pistol/POW. If you haven't shot a straight grip, you should before you decide. I never notice a difference when shooting because I'm concentrating on the shot not the grip. I do like a straight grip a little more for a hunting gun but feel there may be something to the 'added control' of a full pistol grip in deference to the experience of the target shooting experts. I have known many people that won't give a straight grip a chance and have such a predjudice against them that they miss targets when trying my straight grips even though they fit the gun otherwise and are good shots. I also met someone that couldn't comfortably position his wrist on a straight grip. His wrist simply didn't bend in the way needed to shoot a straight grip well. Possibly an old injury prevented his full wrist movement.

BTW, I had a 12g Citori straight grip that I loved for upland.

This is like asking if you should get bucket seats or a bench seat in your new truck.

I like straight for upland and semi-pistol when waterfowling on the ground or in a boat. The s-p just seems quicker to the shoulder there; perhaps curved objects are easier to pick up.

I like straight grips on a smaller gauge gun, like a 20 or 28, and pistol grips on larger bores. I can't see a straight grip on a 10 gauge, for instance.

But mostly buy whatever you think looks best. When the moment comes and lead starts a-flyin' you won't notice what type of stock you have, or what length of barrels you have, or what type of chokes you have. All you will know is feathers flying, barking, and tail wagging. If you have a dog, you will also see him running around.

Hi Gang:

I too was lusting for a RRL in 28 ga. I handled one with a straight stock and it handled very well! I then went home and made a straight stock to try to determine whether or not it was for me. I rushed to the local skeet club where I shot a round of skeet from the low position and I discovered that a straight was not for me! When I shouldered the gun, my right hand felt that it was empty and in the incorrect position. No matter what I did, I could not feel comfortable with straight grip. The straight grip felt great in the store but the truth was that it just felt like I did not have control over the gun.

Oh yes, that RRL 28 ga. is sure a sweet gun to carry and with 1 once loads it should be a great upland gun!.

Try before you buy!

I had a 28 ga Ruger with a straight stock and I shot it better than any other 28 ga I have. A great little gun. I don't know why I sold it.

Given the love for old classics we all share, I would sworn by now someone would chimed in "Mrs. Howell"!
