Just finished Frederick Remington's "Pony Tracks," a compilation of pieces done for various magazines in the 1890s and turn of the century, illustrated with his drawings and paintings from the same period. This edition was put together by the U. Oklahoma Press; edited by J.Frank Dobie.
Amusing and informative writing about the West at the end of the Indian Wars: policing the "new" Yellowstone Park, Yanqui ranchers deer hunting in the Mexican Apacheria, Wounded Knee, etc. And some hunting pieces. One of them is about his first upland trip, to N. Dakota for "chickens and ducks." He brought a "Winchester .45-70" (1885? 1886? the latter, I'd GUESS) and his companions took up a collection and outfitted him with a suitable double. Then he learned birdshooting, on the fly as it were. An amusing process; the guy is FUNNY.
But are Remington's guns still with us in some museum or collection? And did he shoot a REMINGTON? Please tell me it was a high grade '89 or '94!
