Hi I am selling a 85% or so Model 70. Has a Refield top one piece base and was drilled and stock cut for some kind of a side mount (don't know what) Nice rifle normal handling and hunting dings and floorplate wear.

I am looking for advice on how much to ask for it. No pictues no camera.
Thanks just need ballpark idea.

How many holes in the side of the receiver for the side mount? The reason I ask is that if it was a Griffin & Howe mount, it is possible to install a new mount using the oroginal holes.

gbehrman,
I believe you are saying that it currently has a one piece base on top of the receive with the redfield scope and in addition it has been drilled and tapped on the left side of the receive for some kind of mount, please confirm?
The question about number of side hole is a good one and may help identify the mount. Also can you give the manufacture date of the rifle, or if not then the serial number? You can X out the last couple, just looking for the range to determine make year.
Being the 300 H&H this would make it a long or magnum action which is more desirable however all the holes can detract from the value. It sounds like it is not necessarily a collector gun so the market is a user and or a rebuilder who typically are looking for a bargin.
If I were you I would do my research on gunbroker then figure out what would make you happy and then go for it. If it sells you will be happy and if it doesn't you will also be happy because both were based on your happy number.

This rifle is serial #82147 1948 transitional model.

The Redfield one piece base is mounted on the top.

The left side has two holes 3" apart on the receiver just above the stock line.

Two more holes are below the stock line each directly under the above holes making a rectangle with only 4 holes. The two bottom holes are not visible except by looking down the inletted area.

The stock is nicely inletted for the base but with only 4 holes I do not know what base it is

Can't think of the base name as I write but I have that base at home and will look later. It was on a model 70 I have. It was the flip off type mount that you roll to the left so you can use the open sights. Not very fancy and unfortunately detracts significant from the value. I would estimate as much as 20 to 25%. I'll let you know the name later.
Just thinking it may be a pachmayr.

It would be a Pachmayr Lo-Swing Side Mount. The scope is pivoted away from the top of the action to allow clip loading or use of iron sights. Another version made use of the pre-drilled and tapped holes in the receiver ring and bridge of the Model 70, without requiring additional alteration of the receiver.

Replacing the Pachmayr mount (no longer manufactured, but they sometimes appear on eBay) would probably add to the appeal of the rifle.

By your terminology, transition- does this M70 have the first series rear top tang- aka- "Cloverleaf" or the later series- in spite of all the extra drilled and tapped holes in the receiver, and I agree, a Pachmayr low-swing mount seems a likely SWAG here, you do have one solid thing going for you-- pre-1950 means the single cut and then lead lapped barrel boring process- 11 minutes- post 1951 M70's, including the later M70 FW- used a button broach rifling- except for the NM Target series- Can we see some good detailed fotos please? What is the buttstock wearing- a red solid original Winchester pad, or a steel spurred and checkered butt plate, and what is the LOP- usually about 13 & 5/8". Thanks

I have 12 pictures but can't figure how to post them. It is a cloverleaf tang. I have a Pachmyer lo swing from a Rem 721 and it is different.

I can email the pictures if someone wants to see them. Thanks

I am sending you a private message--I might be interested in it- had been looking for a .338 Win Mag, but a .300 H&H is also feasible, as I have located a stash of older Remington Core-Lokt ammo for both .300 H&H and .300 Win Mag, also .35 Whelan--Thanks--
