A friend stopped by yesterday with a crippled Capegun, the stock broken off behind the backaction locks. It has double under bolts and Dollshead, top lever openng, the forend is attached to the reciever, the barrels come off by moving a lever at the front of the forend. The only identifing stampings are a string of numbers under the rifle barrel that is chambered for 8x58R Sauer (fluid steel), the shotgun barrel is Damascus bored 16ga. Any ideas to its linage?

Jerry: It is a Ferlach made cape with one tube at 16.7mm at the 1st pass & the other at 11.0mm so I have some reservations as to the 8mm cartridge unless the 11.0 isn't for the tube(which I would find difficult to believe considering the position of the decimal) or there has been some modification. Datastring is a bit odd as it doesn't have a date but may be a pre-1897 version? Any stamps along the tubes toward the forend hanger or on the action flats?
Kind Regards,

Jerry, Did he bring in the rest of the stock? If not,can he find the rest of it? A break like that can be repaired, much cheaper than a new one and it can be done so as to be unnoticable. Can you show a photo of the muzzle and chamber ends? Maybe it was lined from 11mm to 8x58R. Mike

Raimey, Thanks, we can always count on you for the European Proofs. There are no other stampings on the under rib or the watertable. Do you think that the 11.0 at the end of the data string could represent NOV 1900? Mike, The buttstock is long gone, the search is on for a replacement. I was able to snap a few photos today, we can't see any evedence of a relined rifle barrel, the bore is about perfert. There are two flip-up leaf blade in the rib. He fireformed a 9.3 x 72, cut back to 58mm (5 grains of Bullseye under a full case of Cream-of-Wheat), it matches up to some 8x58R Sauer that I have for my Meffert Hammer Drilling. It has been a hassel but I have the picture posting mastered:).

Jerry: Thanks for the effort. Note how high the decimal is between the 11 & 0 so it represents a diameter. Hum, yet another enigma.

what is the diameter of the hole in the muzzle end of the rifle barrel?
Thanks Mike

You know, it looks to be lined. I've been looking for a lined tube for some time. Kind Regards, Raimey rse

11mm = .433" which would be real close to the dia just ahead of the rim on an 8x58R Sauer, but surely they didn't mark that for the bore diameter.

The breech end doesn't look lined in the photo, but the muzzle end shows a line that could be a liner. If it is really 8x58R and marked 11mm, a liner is the only logical explanation.Has the barrel been "slugged"?What about a chamber cast? Mike

That's what they used to give to gamekeepers in Germany and Austro-Hungary, to shoot foxes and hawks and poachers with. Sorry about the OT.
