Brushed it with the back of my hand trying to ease it aside against the sleeve of my coat. Got a nice mark, almost gone now, between the thumb and forefinger.

Even I'm bright enough (on a good day) to avoid peeing on an electric fence.

Don't get me wrong. I'm quite grateful for the work. I know from no work and no money. But, it's a temporary gig which looks pretty certain to conclude right at the turn of the year, which means I'll be hitting the bricks about the same time the bird season closes here. That means it's either chase rabbits on snowshoes (assuming snow - no longer a given even around here) through cedar and pine thickets or hit the road to places south and hope to find open hunting somewhere.

I could have used just a teeny bit of better timing....

Frazier Park has been a bust.
Lockwood Valley, Quatel and Apache canyons bore no fruit.
Even the Antelope Valley has been birdless.
I walked Hungry Valley with a pretty good GSP and saw 1 covey all day.
Many report seeing no birds so I felt blessed to have at least seen their escape(they flew about 200 yards and proceeded to scurry up a mountain).

No snow last winter, normal spring, drought this summer, dry fall. Hate to wish for snow but we really need it before ground freezes up.

A few of the guys on the California Predators Club forum are seeing birds in decent numbers, but it sounds hit/miss. Some pics up in what looks like the Carizzo, show a nice covey around a spring trough.

I hit the bottom of Apache a week and half ago. Not a one. Up the road a bit, my friend's patch had a covey. I shot one bird out of it and we gave up after chasing it around the hill for a day.
