I just bought my first nice English double, an ejector JP Clabrough, and am trying to get an idea as to its age. The proofs on it were used 1887-1904 as far as I can figure out- any idea how to get a better idea? Thanks!!

Can you post pics of the proof marks and of the gun as well? Use a host such as photobucket to post pics or pm me for my email and I can post them for you.

http://m270.photobucket.com/albumview/albums/claycrusher1900/pix507938455.jpg.html?o=0&newest=1This should be the link to my photobucket account with the pics. The serial number appears to be 1291. Its in the mail to me so I don't have the legend on the rib, but I will post that as well as soon as it arrives! Im just super stoked to finally have been able to buy a quality double, so im trying to find everything I can about it... I found some info on Clabrough by googling it but can't find any info on dates.

I found some info on Clabrough by googling it but can't find any info on dates. Hopefully you will enjoy it. As it has damascus barrels, be sure to use the proper loads. I picked up a damascus barreled Clabrough last summer. From proof marks, we determined it to be from 1904. They are of fairly good quality for the price compared to other English makes. You will find a fair bit of info on the net regarding the history of Clabrough. Once you post the serial number, rib markings and proof marks, then the year should be able to be narrowed down.

I emailed the seller, he stated the address on the rib is 52 Leadenhall St. As for shooting it, I was planning on using my low pressure loads I have used with my laminate barrels.

Clayshooter, Clabrough Brothers were located at 52 Leadenall,Street,London for only a short period of time 1894-5.This is a clear indication of the date of sale and likely manufacture. Claboroughs manufacturing plants where of course located in Birmingham. From the Clabrough catalogue, your gun appears to be a model that sold for $50 approx; circa 1900.By comparison their best gun sold for $150. For further info; on Clabrough see the book by Lawrence P. Shelton,J.P.Clabrough&Bros;Gunmakers.

Thanks Hebbes! I found a reprint of their '95-'96 catalog which I bought, but cannot find the book you mention anywhere. Do you know where I could buy a copy? Also, if you have a '94 catalog, I would love to buy a photocopy of the page(s) dealing with my gun!
