The local gun show/black gun circus came to town today. I couldn't find anything in a sxs that I wanted for anything like the stupid prices being asked, but I was in the mood to buy something.

I spotted an odd looking Remington side-cocker single-shot 12ga with a 32" barrel. I think it is a model 3 take-down model. The hinge pin has a folding flange attached which turns the bolt, freeing a cut-out on the pin so that the pin can be simply pulled out and the barrel/fore-end taken down from the buttstock/reciever. Patent dates are 1894 and 1903 but the only other number besides the serial number is 2070 which appears on both the inside of the reciever and on the barrel beneath the fore-end (which is attached to the barrel with a screw).

I can't find a picture of the model 3 and my books don't mention the side-cocker feature. The model 3 did come in a take-down model.

Whatzit?...Geo

OR, better yet a #3 Rider

Mine doesn't have the push button at the tip of the fore-end and it does have the "take-down" flange to remove the hinge-pin, but that's the same gun, I think. Just not the take-down model...Geo

Mike, looking at the model 3 Rider you added to your post, I'd say mine more closely resembles the 1893 you pictured first. The reciever on mine does not have the sculpted boss I see on either of the model 3 pictures. Thanks for taking the time to help figure out a Klunker with me...Geo

I think the Ryder #3 is w/o the take-down mechanism,,the #9 is eccentially the same shotgun but made with the TD hinge pin.

IIRC the #9 is 1902/03 to the end of production sometime before WW1.
I believe the #9 also had the auto ejector that worked everytime you opened the action,,perhaps as an option(?).

I don't know about the push button forend release.
I don't remember the 2 Ryder #3 shotguns I had being equipted with it. But it was a long time back.

My gun does have the auto-eject system. The picture of the #9 shows a flatside reciever like the one I have. The #3 pictures show the bolster on the side of the frame...Geo

I have a #3 in 20ga. It does have the push button forend release so is a take down, but without removing the hinge pin. I don't recall if it ejects or just extracts. It is double underbolted. I got mine in a batch of parts guns I picked up a long time ago, but have shot it. BBl had been cut when I got it so it is a short Cyl bore, I believe about 24", but may be a bit shorter.

The Model 1893 had the Purdey push button removable forearm take-down method -- from early 1901 Remington Arms Co. catalogue --

From 1902 Remington Arms Co. catalogue --

The No. 9 used a removeable hinge-pin take-down feature -- from later 1902 Remington Arms Co. catalogue --

Are these guns made with selective automatic ejectors or does it eject every time the gun opens, even if it hasn't been fired.

Some of the best fun I have had hunting over my pointing dogs is with a singleshot.

Good thread. Thanks.

Mike, the one I just bought pops the ejector every time you open it. I bought it with the idea of pointed birds in mind; mind you they'd have to be just momentarily pointed then busted way out because the barrel is 32" and it's full choke. I have just the dogs to provide such sporty shooting!...Geo
