That butt plate (as best I can see) and fore end key are percussion style. It's possible it started out that way and was converted.

John, there is a thread from Dec 2011 on here that is about T. Woodward. I would post the link but don't know how.

I wonder if it was sent for nitro re-proof between 1896 and 1904 because the style is certainly very late 1860's to very early 1870's. Lagopus.....

Wow, could be that old. A few more comments on the gun, I forgot to mention it weights just under 7#12 ozs, The condition of the metal is just great with most of the cch still visible on the back locks, barrels are shiny and bright inside and can't see much wear on the outside. There is nothing broken except the stock (it's quite a wreak) / shows much wear. Whoever owned this gun sure looked after the metal to the point of packing the locks with grease (now wax).

The barrels puzzle me, should they not be damascus and brown? or were both types as in fluid steel / color available at that time? I would suppose short of giving them the etch I'll never know.

The lever system brings to mind some of the early falling block rifles, so which came first, I would believe this style of shotgun but I'm not that familiar with histories of these things?

Anyway of telling if it was a "conversion", there should be something obvious, one would think?

Justin, I just don't know, after I get the stock issues resolved I may etch a bit under the fore-end and see if any pattern shows, however I'm open to other suggestions --- John

Are there serial#s on the barrels that match the action #s? what are the proof marks on the barrels? You best post a pict of the proof marks on the barrel that should tell all.
I can't remember seeing a blacked Damascus barrel that did not show some pattern, but I haven't seen all that many
