Diane and I crossed into Canada yesterday with 2 guns. Process took less than 10 minutes at the border and we were on our way. Cost was 25 bucks....

Take the test and get a PAL while you're up there this time. It will save you any hassle at all as well as the $25 per trip in the future. I think the PAL still costs $60 to get...Geo

My cop brother was involutarily directed into a long line of cars and told to cross into Canada, to turn around, even though he objected. When he got to the border, the Canadian border guard asked if he had any guns, he said yes (big mistake), but he was just wanting to turn around. They directed him into the country and had him park, then detained him for hours and confiscated his sidearm even after releasing him. It took months to get the silly grip cocking P7 back. That's the second rediculous Canadian border guard issue I have first hand knowledge of. Those guys are paranoid.

Chuck, you don't know the half of it. But in your brother's case the giant red flag that goes up is because it's a hand gun.
Frankly, I'm surprised they released him and more surprised he EVER got the gun back.
The world cries out for such: he is needed & needed badly- the man who can carry a message to Garcia

If you are really interested in getting a PAL, I have posted all the necessary information on the Shooting Sportsman BBS. I'm currently waiting to receive my card. It takes weeks....maybe longer. The cost is $60 and the card is good for five years.

I am not interested in getting a PAL. As I pointed out, this process was so easy and simple it aint worth it. I filled out the form at home, had a nice visit at the border, and was on the road in minutes...

I know of countless American's who cross the border every year, especially during waterfowl season, who have no troubles at all bringing guns in. And yes it is easier and less expensive if you have the PAL. Most American's I talk to tell me they have more of a hassel getting back into the US with their guns. Of course one never hears the full story.
However, as James said, crossing into Canada with a hand gun is a big no-no.

You can be held up at any border for any reason at any time. That said, if you have a PAL, you probably will avoid most of the hassle in bringing guns into Canada and it's cost effective. Even if you fill out the non-resident declaration, you will have to do this every time you cross the border whether it has expired or not. I'm good for 5 years. In the 40 years I've been taking guns into Canada, I've only been checked for paperwork coming back 3 times, all in the last 5 years and always the same customs officer.
