Just came across 16ga Model 1897 # 365875 with Cyl choked 28" barrel. I want to use it with #1 BK for home defense and for small game at close range with birdshot. I would like to get year of manufacture and any additional remarks good and bad. Thanks.

From my info, appears that it was made in 1907. This makes me wonder what the chamber lenght is. My guess it would be 2&9/16ths, this is no problem for me as I can get short 16s from B&P for my old A5 from 1932. Hope this is of some help.

According to Stadt, Winchester didn't begin making their 16-gauge Model 97s for 2 3/4 inch shells until 1931.

Back in 1907 many shooters in the US were still using "pumpkin balls" for deer and other big game hunting, so cylinder bore makes sense for a gun to be used in close cover for birds and deer. I've seen a couple of other Winchester pumps, '97s and 1912s, that had "long"--26" and 28"--cylinder choked barrels. Back in the day, you could get just about anything your heart desired.
Not sure why shooters buying these just didn't buy the "Brush" variation which is the same but a little handier.

While the gun is in very good mechanical order the key replacement parts (break prone on this model) are: ejector, fining pin, and extractor (not worried about crack-prone forend wood). Are spares still available? Will parts from Chinese 97s fit old Winchester? I do not want a wall hanger or piece for which parts have to be made or others significantly modified.
