I am caretaking a nice old TOlley Hammergun and as you can see below the gun has been reproofed and stamped for 3 inch 1 1/2 oz. loads.
However, as I began stripping the old finish to rebrown the barrels and uncovered an original old stamp of "3 1/4 Paper"
stamped just behind the foreend lug.
Is this unusual? I thought 3 inch was the normal and does PAPER mean the chambers might be slightly larger?

I don't know why they would be...I think paper and plastic hulls were built to the same external dimensions.

The Purdey 10 ga. hammer gun I had was originally 3 & 1/4" according to Purdey.

It probably has something to do with the hull thickness. I have a Russian built 16 gauge Tula SXS. Among the proof marks and inspectors marks on the barrel flats is a notation that it is to be used with paper hulled ammo.

I know it might be considered blasphemy to suggest that the proof houses make mistakes but I have seen a few examples and had it happen to a gun I sent for proof.When they measure the length of the chamber before proofing,if the chamber diameter at the forcing cones is just slightly narrower than the end of their gauge it will stop short of the forcing cones and give a shorter reading. This is the length they will proof the gun at.This may explain why the gun was marked at 3 1/4" originally but was nitro proofed at 3" at a later date.I had a 10 bore that definitely had 3 1/2" chambers and it was proofed at 3 1/4".This was very frustrating because technically the gun was instantly out of proof due to having chambers that measured longer than the proof marks !!! frown

I have never seen it marked thusly before but I would think the "Paper" would refeence that it wasn't bored for brass cases. Plastic would not have been around when this gun was so marked.

Very neat gun...10b/13m, has a little choke does it?

The 10/1 10/2 would make it slightly over standard bore or under?

Best,
Mark

Mark, FYI
After 1887:
10 = .775 - .784
10/1 = .784 - .793
10/2 = .793 - .803
