I'll be in Dallas, technically the DFW area, later in the month and will have an afternoon to tool around. Gunstores and BBQ would be an interest to me. Any recommendations on either?

TIA
Chuck

Chuck,
If you make it down to Austin I'll treat you to some of the best BBQ in Texas, and that's not just my opinion (look up Franklin's BBQ in Texas Monthly Magazine). Check this out...

Jackson Armory seems to have some pretty nice stuff, but they are also the enemy. From their website: "NO SALES OF MODERN GUNS TO CALIFORNIA." If you are just looking you should be OK. Tell them where you are from and they might throw you out.

Chuck: You may also want to look up CHADICK'S in Terrell, Texas just east of DFW on I-20. Herschel has been in business for a long time, escecially with Parkers.

Best Regards, George

Chuck, for BBQ, try Cousin's BBQ in Ft Worth on McCart St. For a steak, go to downtown Ft Worth, and hit Del Frisco's. Try the jalapeno mac and cheese as a side dish. The filet mignon is incredible. And of course, try some Tex Mex. For a chain, El Chico's is hard to beat.
Willoughby and McCabe is on my list but I havent been there yet. The Berretta Gallery in Dallas is great, very friendly, and has some shotguns that cost more than my house. Mi Cocina Tex Mex is in the same parking lot as Beretta...a two-fer!

The best bbq (and Blackberry pie) in Texas is the Salt Lick - technically in Driftwood TX - but I never miss it when I'm in Austin.

More on topic, I've never found truly great bbq in Dallas - and I've been there hundreds of times.

For guns, you shouldn't miss Willoughby McCabe & Co. Last time I was there it was by appointment only, so call Pat and set up a time. You'll hear angels sing as you open the door. Make sure you have some time. I've never purchased a gun there, but it wasn't due to lack of choices.

SALT LICK IS FINE BUT A LONG DRIVE. THE RIB HOUSE ON BURNET AND 183 IS EXCELLENT AND BBQ IS AS GOOD OR BETTER WITHOUT THE RURAL ENHANCEMENTS OF SALT LICK.

Apparently, you've never been to Franklins. I've been to both and Salt Lick is excellent, but Franklins is better and most of Austin agrees with me. If you clicked on that Youtube link, the complaint about the long line, only now they start at 10:00am, is only too true. Yet even with the long wait, I never feel like I've wasted my time eating there.
