I have this old so-called J. Manton shotgun that has lived in my grandfather's closet for a long time. He never really cared for shotguns so when he got it from his dad he just stuck it there and forgot about it. I figure it hasn't been fired in at least sixty years, I don't intend to change that. I was wondering if anybody can help nail down identification for me as I'm quite curious.

I'll let the photos speak for themselves...

Given that this shotgun was proved in Leige, Belgium it is highly likely that it was a mass produced "El Cheapo" double shotgun using the name of a well known English gunmaker to lure the innocent into thinking they had a top quality gun. Similar knock offs were made in Italy and Spain as well.

Unscrupulous makers and dealers were rife in the last three decades of the 1800's. The pictures (even allowing for lack of maintenence and cleaning) give no indication that this shotgun was ever of high quality. Sorry, but it is a wall hanger at best in MHO.

This gun was NOT proofed in Belgium.

I agree, the gun does not appear to be proffed in Belgium. Add photo's of the barrel flats, if it actually is a manton someone like Ballistix999 could make her look like new again.
Even with my limited talents, that's a gun that I could freshen up and at least make her look respectible. Talk about a potential diamond in the rough!

I agree with Rockdoc! I'd get that diamond polished up.

Pete,

Would you care to give an opinion as to where this shotgun was proved? In the picture in your post the lower left hand proof mark looks like the Leige 'tower' symbol or proof marking. None of the proof marks are very distinctive I would agree. You may disagree with my view but if you do please at least give your own opinion as to where it was proved.

Harry.

Surely if the gun had been proofed in London or Birmingham there would be a crown over the V.

I'm no expert but just looking at the quality of the workmanship on this gun, I would imagine that either of the Mantons would have had an apoplectic fit if such a weapon was ever to grace their shops. The engraving is basic, the metal to metal and metal to wood fit is not good and it oozes 'knock off' to me.

Compare and contrast: http://www.heritageguns.co.uk/Manton%20Ham/Manton%20Ham%20Details.htm

Happy to be proved wrong, though!

A horrible fake. Worth perhaps $5 as a wall hanger.
