Hi, I am looking at purchasing a sxs that had the rib come loose. It is WWII era gun in good conditon. Can you tell who ,about how much money it will cost ,the effect of the guns value, and will it have to be reblued. Thanks

Depends on the make and model of the gun as to whether or not it would be cost affective. It is not inexpensive to do this correctly and the barrels would likely need re-blued.

Some smiths have gotten away with re-attaching the rib in the loosened area. It's a good idea to remove the ribs entirely and clean out the area between the ribs as this area often has rust, which may be the reason the ribs came loose.
Stripping the ribs and re-laying them might cost you $200-300. The barrels will then need to be re-blued. Figure on $200-300 for that.

I recently dropped 9 hundy for a total rib relay and rebrown. I figured the gun itself was well worth putting that kind of money into. The gunmaker I chose to do the job was at one time a double gun barrel specialist and has alot of experience in laying ribs, barrel regulating, etc. I knew he'd do the job right and the barrels would be "better than new" when he was finished with them. I probably would not have dropped that kinda coin on a mid to low quality gun.
I've had a gunsmith reattached slightly loosened ribs like Chuck describes, it was a fix that was appropriate for the grade of gun IMO. That job cost me about $300 total and included the reblue. I would not have a gunsmith do a total strip and relay ribs on a shooter grade NID, Sterlingworth, etc. Just not worth the money unless the gun has some sentimental value.

It would be interesting to hear of your experience with hightech adhesives. The stuff I've found indicates shear and tensile strenghths at a fraction of solder. Also, chemical resistance would be a concern.
