Now that I have discovered this nice forum Dave added to the site.......

A very nice rifle that is outside the usual scope of my shooting interest has come my way.

Any help in possibly putting an ID on the maker, or other information would be appreciated.

One interesting detail I noticed when checking the rifling (spotless) in the bore. The lands are very wide, and each land has a shallow curved groove in the center. I've never seen anything like it, but I have never owned a Schuetzen rifle.

How many grooves? Looks like a take-down Martini(???) in 8.15X46R proofed/proved in the final state in March of 1908 at the Zella-Mehlis facility. Austrian type stock? They are fun to shoot once you get the kinks worked out. I assume the globe is missing?

Kind Regards,

I am told the globe may appear, but the person in possession of it has gone out of state till after the first of the year.

Gotthilf V. Nordheim was located in Mehlis circa 1912-1939. There seems to be a large family of Nordheims and if you have an interest we can sort them out.

There are a few Schuetzen rifles by the Nordheims in "Old German Target Arms' by Rowe and all.

There was a gunsmith in American named George Andrew Nordheim who worked in St Louis and then California circa 1818-1894. It would be interesting to see if he was from the same family.

MP,

How does the 1908 proof date work with the 1912-1939 time frame?

The book I am working with that has him listed at those dates they know about. Looks like the Nordheim family goes a ways back in gunmaking. Most of this information was taken from city directories and phone books. It's just a general guide.

I'll PM a email address for Tom Rowe, he may have a lot better info.

Is that Serial number 128?

I would suggest posting your question on the American Single Shot Rifle Association website.
