I stumbled across these images of an offering by French?? maker to the Emperor of Sankt Petersburg and it impressed on me on the probability of W.& C. Scott & Sons being sourced in 1860s & 1870s by the craftsmen of other gunmaking centers across Europe for upper rung offerings. I assume this DR was 1 of 2 and the serial number 302 is that of W. & C. Scott & Sons. I think the owner gave the diameter to be something like 12.7mm. Peter or Marc I will guess you have info on this maker? Link to Joe's post of W.&C. Scott & Sons serial numbers and DGS listing: http://www.doublegunshop.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=253548&page=17http://www.doublegunshop.com/dgsnos5.htmKind Regards, Raimey rse

The occupation in French would be "arquebusier", sometimes abbreviated as it is on this gun.

William & Charles Scott was founded in 1832 and I'm not sure when the "Sons" was added. It may be that the 1865 was the beginning of the serialization of the breech-loader, but that's just a wild guess. Another point of information is that I'm pretty sure Charles Harvey was employed at Wilkinson Sword, which was initially founded by Henry Nock as a gunmaking firm.
Kind Regards,

I recall that the late Bill Wise was very interested in Matskas.
