Recently I picked up a 1917 action that had according to the seller had been redone by Sedgley. I was wondering if anyone had any information on this. I know, of course, that they redid 1903's, but I've never seen a 1917 done by them. I would like
to restock it with a stock similar to what Sedgley would have used.

Ok, here are the pictures, you can see it has a Lyman 34 sight
and any information on that would be appreciated too. It seems like the surfaces of the receiver and triggerguard that are not visible when the action is in a stock are left in a matte finish. Is this also the case with Sedgley 1903's

The barrel contour is different than a military 1917 barrel.

Here is a picture of the caliber marking on the side of the barrel.

And here is a picture of the Sedgley proofmark on top of the receiver.

On the bottom of the receiver, there is a serial number stamped
was this done by Sedgley on 1903's as well?

Thanks,
PhysDoc

The last and nicest 1917 Sedgley I saw was a Mannlicher stocked gun with short barrel. It was an odd combination for the big old 1917, but it came off very nice. It was an iron sight gun with no provision for scope. It was on a gun show table in PA and I foolishly let it go. I would buy it if I saw it again.

Thanks, I've been checking ebay and see that reprints of the Sedgely catalogs are available and that "Enfield action Sedgley" begin appearing in the 1937 catalog. If someone has a 1937 or later catalog, would you please tell me if they have pictures of the Enfield actioned Sedgley's, then I will just order one of these catalogs and get an idea of what the stocks look like.

The gun I saw was stone mint, never been hunting. I'm fairly sure it was a late Sedgley. I just don't know what "late" is. My 1903 Sedgley has been hunting, and probably spent a few nights outdoors.

Thanks Michael for posting that. It is interesting
the calibers they barreled it for. I will definitely have to get a catalog. I don't think I like that stock style.

Changing the subject somewhat, is this rifle in one of the Sedgley catalogs?

PhysDoc, thanks for the link. Wow, a Sedgley tag. How about that engraving. How about the Model 71 Deluxe the same dealer is offering? I think I can see light through the bore.

It's interesting that Sedgley would mark the action rather than the barrel, but that looks like his (S). And the barrel profile is similar to his standard shape. Also, the bottom metal is bent - only about 2/3 of the trigger is visible in the trigger bow. In the photo from the catalog you can see the bottom metal appears quite straight. I'm curious about that rear guard screw - is it a custom made screw that engages at this longer length, or does in not engage fully now? The bottom metal is one of the toughest things to deal with on an Enfield custom, that and the rear sight.

Hi Ryan,

Regarding the screws, I had taken off the triggerguard
to photograph the serial number on the bottom of the receiver
and only put the screws partway in to take the side view of the
receiver. I don't have an original 1917 with which to compare
screw lengths.

All the best,

PhysDoc
