There is an old Fred Williams SxS 12 gauge coming up for auction at a sale in my area. I did a bit of research on the net but didn't find a great deal yet. Does anyone have more info on these guns or what approximate worth would generally run. I have only seen one pic of the gun so far so can't give exact description but I'm kind of just looking for a ball park estimate. The gun is a 12 gauge with hammers. I couldn't make out if it is damascus or not. From what I can tell it appears to be in average condition. I have requested more info (and pics) but haven't received either yet. The auction is a bit of a drive so I am wondering if this gun is even worth pursuing? Was just hoping if someone could tell me a little more about Fred Williams and if I should even bother with it. Actually, here is the one pic.

Birmingham gunmaker I believe. Same quality as Thomas Wild and a few others in my eyes. So definately not up there with the best guns. However not much more can be derived from the picture. Ask for the serial number and at least we can give you the age of the gun. Where is it? In the UK? If it's closer to me than you I can go and have a look for you.
Regards, T

Gunsaholic, check the proof marks on the underside of the barrels You may well find ELG in an oval, means the gun is a Belgian knockoff. Lots of these came to Canada with fraudulent markings to suck the buyer into he was buying a Brit gun. Can you post pics of the barrel flats and the action? We'll soon tell you. Mike

I have had a Fred Williams Hammergun and they are a nice medium grade Birmingham gun. On a Par as mentioned above with Thos. Wild and others.

Yeah, that's the pic from the auction site. That's why I am waiting on more (hopefuly). Yes Mike, I was planning on checking to see if it is a Belgian knock off, if I decide to go to the sale. I don't really feel like checking it in person before the sale as it would be a little over 2 hours drive and I don't have the time before the sale that is in less than 2 weeks. Maybe I can get someone from the auction to photograph or describe the proof marks. If it has the Belgian proof marks I would not waste my time. If it is a Fred Williams in average condition,(cause we can see it isn't excellent) any ideas on a fair maximum bid?

If it was me? No more than $300 US dollars...but I'm going only on what I can see so I may be wrong.

That is kind of the range I was tossing around but I didn't want to appear to be "out to lunch" at the sale. I'll see if the auction contacts me with any more info to hopefully find out if it is worth "the chase".
