It's my understanding that U S Citizens can obtain a Canadian Firearms License. Does anyone on the forum have one? If so does this license permit you to buy firearms in Canada? Jim

Italiansxs, I am an instructor for the Canadian Possession and Acquisition Licence and I have put several US citizens through the course, mostly trapshooters as it makes it easier to pass in and out on the way to Canadian trapshoots, as well as some hunters for the same reason. And yes, you can buy long guns in Canada with a current PAL. I'll be at the Flatwater shoot end of April and will be bringing my forms down in case anyone wants a PAL. Cost $60.00 Mike

I also have a Canadian PAL. In fact its in its second renewal. Besides making it possible for you to borrow, possess and acquire long guns in Canada, it will save you the $50 fee you'd otherwise pay on arrival to do a temporary registration at customs.
If you register your shotgun under the Canadian long-arms registration system, which is free and outrageously easy to do, you'll simply get off the plane and walk right through customs like you had no gun at all. Your buddies will all look on in wonder while they stand in line to fill out the forms and pay their fees each trip.
Although you can buy a gun with the PAL, to bring it back to the USA, you'll need an import permit and have to declare value with US customs which is not nearly as easy to get along with as the Canadians are. If the gun comes under the Gun Control Act there is another form required also on the US side, and you still have to have it booked into your name by an FFL...Geo

I have a PAL, and use it to transport my duck gun into Canada. In my opinion, it is worth spending the one day in Canada ( I live near Detroit) to get the PAL. No hassles therafter. The cretins who inhabit the US Border Patrol offices when returning to the US are another story.

If you have a PAL would it be possible to buy a gun in Canada and have it shipped to an FFL dealer in the United States? I know the U S dealer would have to fill out additional paperwork (Form 6?)but this was no big deal when I had a couple of shotguns imported from Great Britian a few years ago. Jim

Jim, I think what you described by-passes US Customs, which won't work, I don't think...Geo

George: When I imported a couple of shotguns from Great Britian several years ago they had to go thru US Customs at the airport before being released to the FFL who handled it for me. As I remember it; there was some sort of export paperwork required of the Great Britian dealer but I never knew the specifics. Jim

As far as buying Canadian guns and getting them into the States goes, all the PAL accomplishes is to allow you to visit a gunshow in Canada and legally buy a gun. Getting it out of Canada and into the USA remains just as complicated as if you buy a gun over the phone from a dealer up there, and have it exported to a dealer down here; best left to the folks who are in the business...Geo

I guess timing really is everything. I called my friend today checking on getting a PAL and here is a post about just that. Here are the regs on taking firearms into Canada. The current fee is: 35.00Cdn for a two-month registration. This is expensive and time consuming. I hunt grouse a couple times a year in Canada and the law says you have to have the registration with you at all times. Last year, the gun control laws were almost done away with. It didn't happen. So, I am now starting the process of trying to get a PAL. I live in a suburb of Buffalo, but it is going to drudgery to get this. I was advised at the border to get a study guide for the exam. Does anyone know the title of this and where I can get it? http://www.rcmp-grc.gc.ca/cfp-pcaf/fs-fd/visit-visite-eng.htm
