I've got a Scottish Lab. Imported when she was 12 weeks old. She is much better bred (3 Nat'l Champions in her last three generations)than I am. Now almost 9 years old, she has over 1,000 retrieves, and also works as a therapy dog at Detroit Children's Hospital. Scottish and British Labs are the same critters. (Some people make a corny joke about the Scottish dogs barking with a brogue). Compared to American-bred labs they are usually calmer, stockier, with a blocky head and otter tail (instead of a whip tail)

Tudurgs, a very accurate description. Mine is also nine and a little slow now but she is all heart. She once went after a cripple and went out so far in the sound that I couldn't see her anymore. I had to go get the boat and head in her direction. She was still chasing the duck over a mile out. I had to haul her into the boat. When I got close to the duck she went overboard again. A great dog. I bought her when I was stationed in England.

They've got a lot of hunt in them, with no bottom.

Interesting to notice that you see the majority of ads in magazine like Gun Dog or the DU magazine are now for "British style" dogs

If you like Harrison's attitudes on life and food buy and read his book "The Raw and the Cooked". He writes about food like Hemingway wrote about sport.

It's not a cookbook but you may find yourself compelled to thaw out some of that wild game in your freezer, open (several) good bottles of wine and thoroughly embarrass yourself.

Imagine the days when Thomas McGuane, Jim Harrison, Russel Chatham, Richard Brautigan and Guy deValdene gunned, ate and drank together.....it's sensory overload just trying to imagine it.

Have you looked at Hemingway since your school days? I re-read a couple of Hemingway books a few years ago, and was embarrassed to realize I had once been a fan. The most easily caricatured American author since James Fennimore Cooper.

Why did the chicken cross the road? Hemingway: To die. Alone. In the rain.
