Anybody know anything about these things? My late father had one (20ga., 28" mod./full, double triggers, 7lbs.) and 16 years later it's back in my possesion. It's good to relocate a sentimental favorite and re-acquire it!
It's a bit of a club but kind of neat in that it was an American-made Pre-War O/U. I do know they were made from the late 30's to 1942 only. Beyond that I'm clueless.
Any help?

I've seen them in 12, 16, and 20. The 20s seem to be the least common. A friend who usually uses an 870 takes out his 420 16-bore at least once a year on a sentimental journey. I would say they are comparable to a Marlin Model 90, and probably made to compete with the Marlin. Sturdy, well-made and functional, but, as you say, something of a club. My friend's has a little scroll on the flat sides of the reciever; I haven't examined it closely enough to tell if it is engraved or rolled. Suspect the latter.

The engraving was roll-stamped. Savage also used it a few times @1939 on a special Savage 99 rifles drilled for target scope bases that sold for a few bucks more.

Don't know about comparable Model 420 weight, but I had a Marlin Model 90 16 gauge once that weighed 5 lbs 15 ounces.
