Many thanks Pete, that puts things in perspective for me.

1884 Colt Catalog references the two models, 1878 and 1883, to be braised and solderd with proprietary equipment owned by Colt. They also consider the guns to be made with interchangeable parts. No need to go to England as they were behind in the interchangeable part gun manufacturing.

No problem. You were smart to ask. So many of us jumped in feet first. Almost always a costly way to learn. The Colt name is an attraction. But condition and price are always important. Besides, it lead to a good discussion and that is what this bbs is best at.

Daryl:
I will repeat again what I was told by Kathleen Hoyt who was the Colt Historian at that time. The Colt records show that the 1878s were made in Europe for Colt and the 1883s were made in Hartford.
I have no more information than this and I didn't think it was important enought to pursue further at that time.

I found an 1878 that is fully engraved with case.

I have never seen one with this much engraving.

It certainly is more than a grade 3, as we know them.

Steve Cobb has it on his site. Not a cheap gun!

Just explain to her that it is like an IRA investment that you can enjoy while you're alive and that she can profit from when you croak.

A true sign of mental illness is any gun owner who would vote for an Anti-Gunner like Joe Biden.
