Hello,

I am considering buying a JP Sauer & Sohn side-by-side 12ga shotgun for shooting purposes. I am not much interested in value, but in a good shooter, field gun.

Im not really sure if im allowed to post links on guns on auction sites on these boards or not, but im considering buying one of those guns on gunbroker.com and cabelas worth about $800-$1400 range.

This gun is a boxlock, extractors, greener crossbolt, with double trigger, scalloped reciever edges, montecarlo cheekpiece and cocking indicators. I it is allowed, i will post a link of the gun. They list it as a "royal" model.

What model is this gun? What years were they made? DO they all have 2 3/4" chamber lengths or some with 2 1/2"? Also, do these guns remain tight and on face or do they loosen up quick? Any issues of concern?

This is going to be my only gun for a lifetime, as where i live we are only allowed legally to posses one firearm, and i love side-by-sides. These sauers really caught my eye. Please help.

Best Regards,
Al-Anizi

as long as you are shopping, take a look at offerings on auctionarms.com and gunsamerica.com. both are fine web sites, run by good people.

Welcome to the site.

As Raimey said pics would help. I own a couple of West German Sauer Royals (12 & 20) and I have had them for over 25 years. I hunt a great deal but I don't shoot clays and I would guess I have put 7,500 rounds through the 20 and somewhat less through the 12.

The only problem I ever had is the forearm metal that works the ejectors is soft and after about 15 or 20 years they wore down so the ejectors would act up. I had that fixed by a good gunsmith and now my son uses the guns. I figured the single triggers would eventually be trouble but they never have been.

Mine don't have the cheekpiece and swivels that I always see on them and possibly mine were made for the U.S. market. Both guns are still tight and on face. The features you describe sound the same as on my guns. Mine have Arabesque engraving.

I think they are a very good value and if you can pick one up for $800 to $1,400 in good shape that sounds like a reasonable deal to me. I would not part with mine for anything close to that.

Mike.
