noticed these guns are now selling for $1100 or less on gunbroker. are there problems with these guns? or is it just a lack of buyers?

It never was more than a $1100 gun.

I looked at some of the first ones to hit the shelves, and there were fit and finish issues aplenty.

The store eventually sent them back, I believe.

What is it that S&W could have improved to make it the $2000 rig they touted it to be? I'm not arguing for it. I haven't had the chance to handle one so I'm interested in it's shortcomings. Anyone have first hand experience?

I recently purchased one of these S&W Elite "close-outs" from CDNN, and am quite pleased with it.

I saw a couple this past weekend that seemed to be well worth the money. Both in fit and finish as well as handling qualities.

I just purchased a close out from a shop out in Minnesota, $1050! Wanted it as a sporting clays guna and foul weather back up for my Arrieta, I'm totally, 100% impressed with the fit and finish...flawless, is a tad heavy for a twenty but appears to be a well made, well built high quality sxs. The original price on the box was $1799, I have to say that compared to other sub $2K guns I've handled and owned (and some pricier ones too)this is one of the most finely crafted shotguns I've owned. I believe comparable to any RBL I've handled (just opened a can of worms, huh?)

Not sure why they didn't take off, marketing I guess.

Cabelas took a bunch of them too. Priced higher than ya'll found but pretty good pictures;

They have another ad for the singletrigger models. The pictures will blow up on my browser pretty large and it looks to be good fit and finish. I think they have a checkered butt.

Best,

Mike

I called CDNN a few days ago and was informed that they have only 26" guns remaining. That was a deal breaker for me. I may pick one up if I can find a 28" DT model for the same price.

Will keep looking ...Cabella's has them, but they want fifteen hundred.......of course....!.........not like I really need one, but for the 'right price'...why not......

I thought an update might be of interest, now that I have hunted upland birds with the S&W SxS.

Earlier in 2010, when I first purchased this 20 ga. S&W ELITE SxS I shot several rounds of skeet and sporting clays with it. It performed well for an upland gun, but is too light to ever be a great clay bird gun -- at least with my shooting style. But I was able to break the "low twenties" at skeet, and 70's on sporting clays.

More recently I've been using it on upland birds, and remain very pleased. Its a joy to carry, at less than 7 pounds, and I've been downing birds well (by my stndards). The only thing unusual is that the safety DOES OT automaticall set ON when the action is opened. Most of my other SxS's do so. This just requires a different routine when reloading after a shot.

It has 3" chambers, but I find the 3/4 oz. 2-3/4" loads work fine for me.

CDNN still has these S&W SxS's on sale for $1,190, but only in 26". Mine is an english stocked 28" model.

I also have one. Mine weighs 6lbs 4oz. I have shot trap and hunted the heck out of it this year and it has performed flawlessly. It does not have an auto safety but it states that in the specs. I prefer mine without. I have shot Sage Grouse, Sharptail Grouse, Ruffed Grouse, Prairie Chicken and Pheasants with it so far. I will be using it on Gambles and Scailed Quail in a couple of weeks. The fit and finish is as fine as any RBL I have seen. My friend was so impressed he bought one as well. Here they both are with their first Prairie Chickens.
