Hey guys. New meat here. Made the mistake of walking in to Briley's in Houston to have a gun repaired and picked a gun they had on consignment.
It was a NIB condition and would swear it had never seen a shell in it. The twin of this same gun is still there in 12ga.
The 20ga pistol grip model 385 is now mine. Price was $1,650.
Anybody have an opinion on what I got. Mostly stick with Beretta but this was too sweet a gun to pass up.
Any idea when they discontinued making SxS's at SKB?
Looking forward to chatting on the forum and getting to know some of you guys.

you did get excellent shotgun capable of handling modern ammo including non-tox shot. the fact that most came with choke tubes places it above much admired BSS. in terms of quality it's equal to winchester 23 pigeon or bss grII ble. wish i bought 12ga sporting model with vr when they made them. they seemed to disappear from american marked ca. 2005.

The SKBs are great guns. Well made, good to handle. Larry Brown wrote about them some time ago. Perhaps he will chime in. I have been following the price on the 385 for a while. You paid about right for a 20ga. You will enjoy it.

I believe SKB stopped making sxs around 2000. I had the opportunity to field test one of the last guns imported to the States--although no one realized the pipeline was about to dry up. It was a 385 with a straight grip and splinter (or very trim semi-beavertail) forend, and a duller oil finish rather than the bright finish on the previous 385's. I thought that they finally had it all figured out. Then the guns stopped coming in.
At that price, you got a good buy. The 385's are a bit heavier than the old Ithaca imports, but you also get screw-ins.

I had a 12 gauge SKB M-485 [same as yours but with side plates] that I shot a lot with 7/8 ounce loads. The fillet [spelling?] behind the forearm hanger failed and separated allowing the forearm hanger itself shift towards the receiver and snap off at the weld. [btw-This is now one piece on the RBL's].
