John has covered it pretty well.

That said, if you have to give a number why not say "X inches from the trigger in the center position....or in the rear or forward position" ?

That way, 2 different people should at least get the same number. How they interpret the number is something else.

The position of the trigger itself has nothing to do with comparing length of pull from one gun to another. The extreme rear of the curve of the trigger guard is what determines the position of your trigger hand. You can't make it go any farther forward than this curve and most shooters don't place the hand any farther back. The position of the trigger in the guard doesn't have anything to do with gun fit other than how much you have to stretch your trigger finger to reach the trigger. How you measure LOP is your decision when describing your gun for sale. However, when having a stock built, you had best consider factors other than just trigger to butt dimension.
