Me, I am more interested in the head position of the dog in this photo. He appears to have decided that he would be put to better use providing shooting tips instead of holding birds on point.

Interesting illustration "Summer Woodcock Shooting" from Harper's Weekly July 1886. Lotsa drop and the butt is out on his deltoid and comb down on this poor fella's jaw so he can look down the barrels!
