Does the M-21 fence/action/receiver lend itself to sculpting? In other words, if I wanted to consider a M-21 for a custom project, can it be sculpted to change the look? I did a search of the site and could not find anything on M-21's being sculpted. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Thanks;

Jeff - Many guns from Winchester's Custom Shop had the spear on the frame ground off, and are referred to as "Flat Sided" guns. Grinding off the spear (which apparently wasn't needed for strength), allowed a larger flat surface for engraving

Sounds like a question for Steven Dodd Hughes. If it is possible to may a M-21 look pretty?

Yes they can. Winchester would scollop the back of the frame on special order.

How about arcaded fences or some sculpting around the hinge pin area like the Parkers. The long frame of the 21 cries out for something to relieve the blandness of same.I have seen a 21 with the rear of the reciever scalloped and it was very nice.

I like the notion of rounding off the spears on each side of the frame and arcaded fences. Sculpting around the hinge pins sounds interesting. Any photos of custom M-21's that have had the frames sculpted would be great.

The Winchester 21 frame is not longer than the Parker frame. I have measured and the "long frame" is an optical illusion. I have my measurements around here somewhere, but I will let you all check my work and report back.

That is interesting as it sure looks longer. The "waist" and recessed hinge pin on the Parkers is very appealing.I like the Syracuse Lefevers also,altho' it does look a bit dated in its ornateness on the higher grades.

I found a photo of a M-21 that appears to have the spears sculpted completely off the frame.

Call Tony Galazan. He'll build you a new one, anyway you want.
