On another post there's a debate raging about the relative merits of the Parker originals vs the reproductions. I thought I'd kick off another here and ask about the engraving. Some time back I spent a lot of time looking at the reproduction engraving under magnification and came to the conclusion that it is a mix of etched and hand-cut work. Does anyone know differently?

I just remembered something else that I should throw on the table. I found that the engraving, or whatever we are going to call it, was not identical from one (of two) gun to the other.

I read everything I could find on the Parker Repro when I got mine. I never saw anything about hand enhancement or variation of the machine cut design of the "engraving".

I believe the Reproductions had machine "rolled" engraving. All the ones I've seen (in DHE grade) were identical. Homer, I think the colors were done by a chemical cyanide treatment, not heat. Joe

Colors were very fast-fading. That was one of the knocks on the guns.

Parker Repro DHE engraving was rolled on/machine engraved where flat on the action and hand chased where rounded--such as the breech balls and trigger guard areas.
As quoted directly from a Repro brochure: "The frame is case hardened using the same methods as the original Parker producing the indigo blue with its rose overtones to reminisce the golden age of wind shooting." (Yes, it does state "wind" shooting.)

Well, original Parkers were cyanide colored, so I guess the brochure is correct. Most of my originals are brown or white, so a well worn Repro looks just fine to me.

...original Parkers were cyanide colored... Only the Remington Parkers, no?

The repo failed to coat their colors and the brass braise job on the center lump inside the action killed case coloring furnaces. Oscar had to entirely rebuild his to get rid of the brass contamination after doing just one repo. Original Parkers were bone colored, Del Greco rework is cyanide.
