Hello, I sent Dave Weber an email asking for help on identifying a shotgun and he suggested I post it to this forum. It is my uncle's shotgun and it was his grandfather's. I took some digital photos. I'll post them and any questions that come up, I'll try to answer. I own four firearms and I used to hunt, but I'm not knowledgeable on the subject. Thank you for any information/worth you can provide.

Again, thanks for your help. I couldn't turn up any of the numbers in books and/or the Internet.

You can go here to find the proof marks:

Pieper was a very large Belgian maker. It is difficult to tell much from your photos. It may be a modified Diana. What is on the ribs?

The "numbers" you refer to are the serial number. There is no serial number list for Pieper guns that I am aware of.

Here comes my gun newbie part.... I don't know what the ribs are, so I Googled it. It appears to be a kind of grill-like assembly that sits atop the barrels? If that is it, the shotgun has no ribs. Both of the barrels have nothing on top of them.

Thanks for the link. Do you know if there is any specific place that Pieper put the proof mark? Or was it placed randomly on the weapon?

Is there any other kind of angle/view of the shotgun that would make identifying it easier?

The gun has ribs, I can see the bottom rib in one of your photos.
This is a picture of the top rib of a Pieper gun:

Here is a current thread with pictures that show Belgian proof marks.

Most Pieper's sold in this country were through catalog sales. 1897 Sears catalog.

1888 Schoverling Catalog.
