Tom:

Are you looking for marks relatively current or pre-WWII? For current there's a British(Proofhouse??) publication entitled "Notes on the Proof of Shotguns & Other Small Arms" 5th Edition/November 1993(I'm sure there's a more recent edition). And is available from GGCA( http://www.germanguns.com ) as B066 - http://www.germanguns.com/books.html . Out of print is Wirnsberger's "The Standard Directory of Proof Marks" for up to the 1970s and GGCA sometimes has it.

Kind Regards,

Raimey

Here are the Gun Digest articles by Lee Kennett for proof marks:
22nd Edition Czechoslovakia -1968
23rd Edition Austria Hungary & Austria - 1969
24th Edition France - 1970
25th Edition Spain -1971
26th Edition Italy - 1972
27th Edition Hungary - 1973
28th Edition Russia - 1974
29th Edition Germany -1975
30th Edition Military - 1976
31st Edition England - 1977
32nd Edition Belgium - 1978
33rd Edition India -1979

There was some talk in the articles about a book or collection, but it never seemed to happen. If there were other articles by a different author in Gun Digest, I am not aware of them. Hopefully some one will have more information.

You can usually pick these Gun Digests up on eBay for a few dollars each, plus shipping.

You should be aware these articles, while very good are somewhat dated. He did them mostly in 70's. Some of the eastern European information is limited. None of the articles has any date codes, if I recall correctly. Also the subject of makers marks (trade marks) is never touched.

For Belgian proof marks:

You can get the French and Spanish marks here:

Although Kennett's stuff is about as good as it gets IMO--with the exception of updated material on individual countries--there have definitely been some changes since then. British proofmarks, for example, have been changed twice since then.

Wirnsberger,s book, The Standard Directory of Proof Marks, is available as a reprint from Gunnerman Books. Price is $35.Tel; 248-608-2856.
The Gun Digest Treasury, Published in 1960 contains a series of articles on European and British proof marks that is second to none! The articles covers 72 pages it includes many illustrations. The author is A.Baron Englehart.A hard to find book, but it is truly a treasure.
The Shooting Sportsman,Jan-Feb 2009 contains an excellent update on the British rules of proof.Author is Vic Venter, one of several superb articles published, by Vic,under the heading, "Guncraft".

I am fortunate in having a copy of the Gun Digest Treasury Roy mentions & give a hearty second to his statement. I will also note these articles appeared individually in Gun Digests during the 50's. It is of course much more convenient if one can find the Treasury. It would surely be a boon to collecters if Gun Digest would see fit to republish both sets of these articles in a book form available at reasonable cost, but that doesn't seem to be happening.

I have that same edition of the Gun Digest Treasury. The series of articles by Kennett update Baron Engelhardt's work. (For example, Engelhardt's article on British proof ends with the rules of 1925. Kennett's includes the changes made in 1954, when the Brits started using the "tons" marks.) The two of them together are likely the best and most complete source on proof in most foreign countries, although as noted above they also are in need of updating.
