Looked at a Pieper Bayard 12G sidelock on the weekend for a friend, overall nice condition owner wants $250.00, locks up tight, greener crossbolt system, but the top projection extends further and forms a fourth bite under thr top lever(never seen this before), bores mike at.716, chokes start at around 5 inches from muzzle, run for 2 3/4 inches and then straight for 2 1/4 inches .020 right .030 left half and three quarters barrells marked Bayard Steel proofed 2 3/4 Belgian proof marks. What is known about these guns

There is a lot known about Pieper and his Bayard trade marked guns. If you can read French, there is an excellent book about Pieper.

If you take the barrels off, you will find the Belgian proof marks. You can look them up here:

Pieper was in business for very long time. His son Nicholas was running the company when they started using the Bayard trademark.

It would help if you could post some pictures of the gun. I have a several Pieper catalogs and may be able to id the model. I own several Pieper guns, including a Bayard 28ga.

PeteM is right, I have a circa 1905 hammergun that is very nice. It also has the two underbites coming throught the frame, Greener crossbolt and hidden 4th fasterner.

Couldn't shoot it loose with dynamite.

Pieper was more than an arms maker. Like so many he was into many arenas. Here is his 1900 electric car.

To cut costs or to make more money most big gunmakers acquired a forge or metalworking facility. As time progressed tubes and arms were only a very small part of an arms company as autos, bicycles, motorcycles, etc. were sub-parts that were essential in order to survive, with the exception being military contracts. Did Pieper manufacture bicycles?

Thanks Peter and I did find the name "Manufacture Francais D'Armes et Cycles" on page "Thirty-Nine" of F. Adolph's catalogue reprint.
