Not to stir up a hornets again but I was on the website of Diamond Gunsmithing, a firm that is owned by a man that was the head gunsmith for Ithaca. Stating that they do Ithaca restorations, they apparently use the torch method to do case colors. Is that the way they were done at Ithaca? If I have a 4E SBT redone like this, will it have authentic colors? Thanks

Apparently they did at the very end. Shortly before Ithaca Gun Co. went belly up, a friend of mine shipped them a great little NID Grade 3E 20-gauge with SST and vent rib to be redone. It came back torched!

I had this 1934-vintage NID .410-bore redone by Doug Turnbull just about the same time as IGC did in my friend's 3E.

Not to stir the pot but ask some questions first. I was looking into Diamond a couple of years back and he told me that any 2-1/2" chambered gun that was sent to him for work would have to have it's chambers lengthened to 2-3/4". He said it was a liability issue.

I see he no longer states that on his website but if your gun is short chambered I would ask to be sure.

It is my understanding that Ithaca lost the ability to redo case colors. They could not redo them so they tried a substitute with what many here consider a lesser treatment of torching or chemicals with heat to try to recreate case colors. The effect is less than desirable to most if not all.

Colt also had a problem many years ago. The secret formula/process was lost and they struggled to rediscover lost process. When you have only one or two people doing the work their retirement or death can create a major problem to makers. Many a great "secret way" has been lost because of this. Others try to rediscover what others have been doing for years.
