I have a late '60's Winchester 101. The metal pistol grip cap has a red "W" Winchester logo on it. I'm not sure how to remove it and would greatly appreciate any direction, if anyone has been through this before. Thanks, in advance, for any help.

There is a screw under the red "W" insert that is glued to the grip cap. The insert is ease to damage as it is thin aluminum. Be careful if you try to loosen it. If I may, why are you wanting to remove it?

Thank you Don, this confirms what someone else told me about the emblem being glued down. I tried forever, it seems, to find a 101 waterfowler. I gave up and bought a 32" 101 in trap configuration, perfect condition. I took the drop at heel down to a hair under 2 1/4 and put in a bit of face cast. Now I need to remove the remaining finish on the stock. I will replace the existing finish with an oil finish and removing the grip cap would make things easier. I think I will try to go forward without removing it and hope for the best. Once again, thank you.

I suggest that you not shoot steel in those full choke barrels as it may cause them to separate.

Hello TRK,
If you soak the stock in acetone to remove the finish the emblem will surely come off unscathed.

Thanks, Don. Right now it's a winter pigeon/crow gun. Will eventually put Briley thin wall steel chokes in for next fall.
JayCee - Thank you - that is a good point - I will try that. Do you think the acetone will affect the paint/coloring on the emblem itself?

Acetone will destroy the colors on the aluminum overlay...FYI.(screen printed on)..suggest you call Midwest Gun Works in MO.(MGW), I think they have replacement red-letter W old style labels....then you could peel off the old one with acetone, do your stock work and replace with a fresh new label...the outer ring, of course, is pressed steel...
Good Luck,
Doug

Thank you, PA24, I thought as much. I guess if you're going to make an omlette, you have to break a few eggs .... Sigh. The comb height fits me now. Perhaps I should be content with that.

Why, Don? Don't you think between the modern shotcup and steel-compatible chokes the barrels will be sufficiently protected? TRK
