Just bought a very nice vintage SxS. No, it is not a highly collectable model, just a real pretty and possibly unfired high quality Belgian hammer gun with post-1924 proofs. It has Greener cross bolt and is stiff as all get out. Having almost worn myself out opening and closing the action and making only samll gains, I feel that perhaps a light stoning of some parts might help. Not wanting to go too far and end up with a loose gun, anyone have any sound advice on what parts and how much to polish? Thanks.

I would say stick with what you are doing, plus shooting it and the appropriate follow-up cleaning it is the best solution.

Rudy- a wise old gunsmith once told me "Oil moves-grease stays put"-and although I don't own an O/U or shoot clays- I believe Browning and Ruger provide a tube of lube with a new O/U- a dab on the hinge pin, trunions, etc- and a lot of careful opening and closing- filing or stoning metal parts- whether through hardened or case hardened- is long and tedious work- and you might need a gauge or set of dims. to check your progress- easy enough to get a flat surface "concave or convex" or a hook or cam "out of round"- and leave your Dremel tool and grinding bits in the tool box- "Little older men with Files- maybe!!"

Better yet, shoot it and don't clean it up afterwards. It will wear itself in pretty fast...Geo

I remember when I bought my 686 X MONO Trap gun it took me about 1000 rounds to loosen it up. My son's was the same way. I would try Clenzoil and that should help. But I would not stone it or mess with it. Some of the guys in my area have some "red grease" they use that will loosen a gun up a gun to the point where you don't want to put it inside on the action because it loosens it up too much. I don't know what it is. But just keep opening and closing it. It will loosen up. Good luck. Sounds like a nice gun.

A new Darne can be a pretty stiff gun. My experience was that just cycling the action was not as effective as taking it out and actually shooting the gun. A weekend of skeet, sporting clays or trap will do wonders.

Just bought a case of light trap loads, so off to the range I will go. I will se if heavy grease may also be the problem when I disassemble this weekend. Thanks for pulling me back from the edge!!
