It looks cool but it's very impractical. I have leather stuff that belonged to my grandfather. The pants are lined with flanel and are OK if you are sitting in a goose pit if it's really cold, not too wet and you're not walking around. I had a pair of leather levi's that were the most uncomfortable garmet I ever owned but I always got comments when I wore them.

Alex,
You might look at the Orvis.com site. They have a number of jackets but this one (Bandera Jacket) looks like the most suitable for upland hunting. http://www.orvis.com/store/productchoice...;subcat_id=8228

I'm of the same opinion as the others on the practicality of leather in the field. I find it heavy, and lacks insulating properties, but very stylish. Might be nice for a less physical type of hunt like a driven shoot or such. My upland hunting usually requires me to strip down to a cotton shirt and jeans such that I'm cold standing still. But I live in CA.

BTW Alex,
If you're looking for a good western hat, the people at Mackey Hats are great and their hats are the best hats I've seen or bought regardless of price. Their prices are in the middle and their quality above any of the other 'boutique' western hat makers that charge two or three time more. My friends and I have many of their hats.

You might want to do a search. I do seem to remember a discussion on one of these boards of some upland hunter wearing a pair of "assless chaps"!!!

Always seemed to me that the adjective above should be understood when used with "Chaps" unless you wore them without pants. Hmmm......nooooooo!!!

I'm old school when it comes to my shooting clothes anyway, so I doubt a leather shooting coat would be much different than all the old worn our crap I tote around now. I've been on the hunt for a sheepskin coat to wear late season goose hunting, just gotta find one that will fit my overlarge frame. *laughs*

Destry

P.S. I'm the kind of nut that doesn't like neoprene waders if that tells you anything. If you could still buy decent straight rubber ones that's what I'd wear.

I met a German hunter a couple of years back (in Germany) wearing a leather hunting coat with a heavy wool sweater underneath. The jacket was plain but interesting. He was also wearing knee length leather trousers with rubber boots and a wool brimmed hat with a Gemsbart attached to the side of the crown.(I know, surprise, huh!!)If I remember correctly, he was carrying a couple of pheasant (or hares??) suspended by leather thongs attached to a leather belt. The color was a dark green. Whether or not there was an internal game pouch I do not know. A search of some of the European hunting magazines might turn up something. Good luck in your search, and please post a picture if you find anything.

What works on the European hunts does not necessary mean its practical here, good thing you didn’t meet the Amazon tribesman, you should see the leather thongs they wear on their hunts, they won't be very practical here neither.

Please note Buzzbee that I never once mentioned the practicality of the coat, merely that I had met a German gentleman wearing one and the original poster was asking for information on one, hence my post. Nonetheless, thank you for that most informative description of the Amazon tribesman and his hunting attire. I assure you I will not ask him who his outfitter - or his tailor -is if we should have the occasion to meet.
