I was at the Scheels store in Fargo this afternoon and was looking at a display in there store of a 1920's leather hunting outfit. The set included both a leather jacket and leather pants. I thought it was kind of a neat setup, does anybody know if they still make hunting specific leather jackets of decent quality?

A lot of the old time leather shooting jackets were actually made from dogskin believe it or not. I've seen several different ads for them in the shooting papers of the time.

The one I was looking at was for upland game judging by the pockets. It was actually a really nicely done display complete with an 0 grade LC Smith.

Must have been made for shooting from a wagon, or riding horseback to dismount near a pointer. I can't imagine wearing full leather garments afield if you ever hunt hard enough to raise a sweat!

Leather cuts the wind pretty good, I'd imagine an outside jacket made from that with a wool sweater underneath would work well for duck shooting. I always dreamed of a sealskin jacket for waterfowling, too bad they made that pesky Marine Mammals Act.

Leather is not a very flexible material , its heavy and the worse part it draws moisture like a sponge. Try shooting a round of sporting clay or golf in a leather jacket next time and judge for yourself. I like something that is light weight, breathable, flexible, water proof and shield from the wind. I find Gortex is the best material fits that description. Get yourself a pair of good chaps to put over jeans for the bottom half, something like the Folsom Tin-cloth, you will be glad you did.

I only wear my leather in cold weather,it does break all the wind and keeps me dry.I believe the leather outfits we see the plainsmen dressed in was salt cured from the inside out and you would soon have the odor of the game you were hunting.

I can see it now Destry bobbing around in his vintage punt boat dressed to the hilt in seal skin.
