Can anyone please help with the identification of this shotgun? I bought it at a flea market and want to restore it to as close to original as possible. It is a 10 gage, thin twist, Birmingham double. Needed info: Gunsmith, barrel blueing and names of any books that will be helpful. Any help is greatly apprieciated. 9 Photos are at the following address: http://s260.photobucket.com/albums/ii10/goldiloxgem/?action=view¤t=Picture015.jpg Thank-you Leslie

Leslie:
Is it a 10 bore Birmingham double? The proofmarks are a little fuzzy. Are the tubes iron or twist?
Kind Regards,

Nice looking muzzle loader. I have a mid 1850's vintage Manton 9 bore that looks very similar, I shoot it occasionaly at double gun events and have shot a few pheasants with it. Be careful that your gun isn't loaded, several folks on the board here have reported obtaining loaded muzzle loaders, one guys gun fired when he was heating up the breach plug with a torch prior to taking it apart. Just check the depth to the bottom of the barrels using the ramrod, you should be able to almost reach the percussion nipples. If it's loaded the rod will stop an inch or two above the percussion nipples. It does appear to be British and may have been built for export. Others here can probably tell you more now that you've published pictures. Steve

your barrels were originally browned, not blued. I have tons of refference books, but can't think of any that would be of much help for your gun. My guess is that williams only sold the gun. Is there an address on the rib? If so, Boothroyds books may have a little info for you, most likely only the dates at that address. If the barrels are sound, a rebrown and nice finish on the stock should make a nice shooter. Before investing any money have a gunsmith that is familar with black powder muzzleloaders check it out. You need to be concerened with pitting, wall thickness and the ribs. Loose ribs are not inexspensive to fix. Proceed slowly. If you cant find someone to look at it for you, I would be glad to. Steve

The reference book, "English Gunmakers". by De Witt Bailey & Douglas A. Nie, Lists 20 Birmingham gunmakers named Williams. Almost all of them were in business at the time your gun was made.Without a street address, positive identification of the actual manufacturer is impossible!Your pictures show an inexpensive gun. The proof marks are Birmingham, black powder of 10.G[Bore].The twist barrels and stamped name, are typical of thousands of low cost guns produced by many different Birmingham makers. Majority of guns of this quality were exported..
