I will be stroking the 14ga. SxS ml'er. If I do use a moedern gun, it will be the Baker Leader, but I haven't in a couple of years. I am hoping the farmers get some silage off by next weekend, all we have is heavily growing fields yet and I hate shooting over those. With the heavy rains we just had, the wheat ground is growing thick and tall again as well.

Dueling Prussian Dalys for the opener.
An 11 pound, circa-1885 hammerless 10 gauge gun for early season goose in the morning. At noon I plan to switch to a similar circa-1890 gun in 12 gauge for dove.
I'll hunt a local dairy farmer's cut corn field in Northern, VA, with a couple of friends. Usually not a ton of birds, but hope springs eternal . . .

Chris, No I am a good friend of Waynes, but think the price of his hunt is to excessive. I used to be a member of the bird dog club when we had our meetings there. My friends and I meet at the popcorn fields in Meridianville, Usually a good hunt, but went out there the other day, and the lack of rain has really hurt.. so i do not know what kind of hunt it will be...Waynes does usually have a good hunt...

In MO, I will have my 20 ga Flues IF I get it back from the 'smith in time. Having the chokes changed from M-F to .003 & .010. Primarily will be a quail gun here and Grouse/Woodcock when I can get back to MI. I have almost a case of RST, ready to go :).

I'll start the opening morning with a Belgian Browning 20 o/u and switch to a CE Lefever 12 as the birds get spookier. I've been watching the weather in Yuma, looks like we'll have it a little cooler this year....temps under 110 Jay

In most states, the opening day of dove season is September 1st, only nine days away.
1. Which SxS shotgun will you use on opening day?
2. Do you usually shoot a round of skeet, trap, or sporting clays as practice sometime before opening day?
JERRY
1. Not a SxS - just my favorite gun a 1988 Wingmaster 870 28ga 2. Dove season is practice for the real bird season.

You must be a good shot, erik. Good shootin'..... And Ken, we had a guy at our club years ago who shot a Canadian Goose that flew past the trap house. He couldn't resist. It was out of season, too. He didn't come back to the club for a while.

He didn't come back to the club for a while. That's funny, not to condone that behavior. I have been having quite a few doves fly by at my club while shooting 5-stand. It takes some strong self control to not shoot at them.

Jay, Welcome to the board! Hope that your opener proves satisfactory in all ways. Yuma sounds HOT, at least from a temp perspective.
I have no plans for the opener just now, tho I'll likely get out somewhere if I can work it out. Bidness obligations immediately after the holiday has required all my focus lately. Have a mid month shoot planned in W. TX that I'm looking forward to. The rains have the birds scattered this year, water & food everywhere. Cooler weather has the sunflower making late and the seeds are still green! Early season hunting is going to be challenging as there are no real concentrations of birds. Late season may prove more productive here, at least that's my feeling. Plan to use my RBL & an older vintage Beretta 20 this season, but also have an early 37 Ithaca 20 that I like to take afield for dove at least once per season just because.
Topgun's ending sentiment is reflective of my own. I would stress: be safe, wear eye & ear protection, shoot no low flying birds, ever .. and take more out of the field than you take in [trash]. Plastic bags take up little room and weigh nothing to take in, mine get loaded with stuff .. from old cans & hulls to paper and junk food bags to bits of bailing wire & old bottles or broken glass coming out.

I did not send out invitations this year. Too busy trying to get moved into a new home. What a night mare! Give me a call if you want to come up.
