Hi Gang:
I need to find a buttplate that has some class to put on a custom gun. I fit a Kickeez pad when I stocked it, but I think that the Kickeeze looks terrible on a classy gun! I need to know where I may obtain nice buttplate that I may fit or a source for a piece of ebony that would make a nice buttplate. I often thought that an ebony buttplate would look very nice. If not ebony, perhaps I could stain a piece of wood black. This may allow the grain of the wood to show through the stain. I have some cherry wood that might make a very nice looking buttplate after being stained black. I would really prefer to find a source of ebony though!
Any ideas? TIA,
Franchi

Ebony would look nice if polished and checkered. Another thing that I like, a lot, on a gun is a skeleton steel butt plate with very fancy internal cutouts and the center area of wood checkered. They look good both case colored or french grey. That you can make yourself starting with a solid butt plate from Brownells and making the cut outs yourself.

I have bought 3/4 inch horn buttplates from Lewis Drake. They need fitting, shaping, drilling, checkering or grooving, but other than that, they are ready to go!

You can find ebony on ebay. Type "ebony lumber" in the search box and look through the listings for a piece the size you need.

Are there any "exotic" wood dealers near you...my local sawmill deals in a bit of nice wood for carvers or Lathe work...lots of small bits in the cut-off bin......then you can pick a nice even black bit,...or mighy find some other nice piece that strikes your eye....might be worth a look if there's any nearby good hunting franc

lewisdrake.com Use search word "horn". They are on sale for $25.00, regular $35.00. We bought a few at last year's Vintagers, just couldn't resist. They will be in my junk drawer after my death if you still need one. I bought three Mittermier horn plates a couple of weeks ago. They are basket weave, very nice. They will be in the same drawer.

Horn would be the way to go in my opinion.
This was traditionally used as a butt plate, where one was used, after the demise of steel plates, skeleton plates or heel and toe plates.
Bear in mind that most best sidelocks do not have any kind of butt plate.
I'm sure you will get a horn blank as a source has been suggested, if not, Attleborough Accessories in the UK supply them.
