Who was that British maker who made very light doubles with the tiniest of splinter fore ends and that funky skeletonized walnut stock? Once knew but, in my old age, can’t for the life of me, remember.

Thomas Turner. Mine was just over 6 lbs. See page 1 of this thread for photos.

Bob:

Are you thinking of the 2" 12 bores that were popular between the world wars? Skimin & Wood has been credited with popularizing them in the 1930s. Many are sub 6 pounds and proofed for 7/8 oz loads. Here is an example: https://www.vintageguns.co.uk/magazine/a-two-inch-12-bore-from-the-1930s

If you like 2x12s, there won't be many nicer than this
https://www.westleyrichards.com/usedguns/view/shotguns/1686076436-holland-12g-twelve-two-/

Obviously, not a Skimin and Wood action and a little on the chubby side, but still pretty nice, to say the least.

What I'd like to closely examine someday is one the Thomas Turner Lightweight hammerguns. I've seen some online and they were executed with all the features of the later boxlocks (scalloped stock, short forend, etc.) and if anything they seemed to be even better finished.

LeFusil:

I see what you mean after reviewing a Thomas Turner 2 1/2" gun posted by "Joe in Charlotte" here back in 2011. Here is the link: https://www.doublegunshop.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=215121

I saw a box lock Turner, with such a short fore end my hand was almost as wide as it was. Maybe 5” long, 6 at the most. Did not bother me because I could never shoot a double with my off hand so close. I would just add a leather hand guard and enjoy it. That minimalist stock is different but not unattractive. Did not weight it but six pounds at the maximum. Special gun for a niche market.

Yes. The Thomas Turner. I have one in storage and I’m consigning it with Champlin and I absolutely could not think of its maker to tell George. I originally bought it because I just thought it was a well done, attractive and interesting piece of the gunmakers’ art. The package with incredible engraving, beautiful if kinda funky wood and the brass oval on top of the heel of the stock just charmed me at the time and then I shot it well with light RST or Polywad loads.
