I have an old Sabatti Saba Italian side x side box lock with some nice deep relief engraving, machine made. I’d like to fill the recesses to show the engraving better. Does anyone know what I could use? I was thinking just cold bluing the relief and polishing the raised surface, but would enamel work better?
I use Renaissance wax with a little lamp black added for that black background look. Clean off the engraving with acetone then give the engraving a couple of coats of the wax/black, with a finger tip, wiping lightly with a paper towel each coat. I give a couple more coats of clear wax as added protection. The wax can be had at GRS as well as other places. I get the lampblack from lmii.com, a luthier supply business in CA.
Lee Valley sells a version of Renaissance Wax. I think they call it Conservator’s Wax. Identical chemical composition amd easier to get if you are in Canada.
I occasional run into that stupid “won’t ship to Canada” BS. My usual workaround if I want it bad enough is to just have it shipped to a friend in the US and then have him forward it. But really……too hard to drop in the mail with a Canadian address?
